HP Pavilion DV3-2150US 13.3-Inch Entertainment Laptop Customer Review

I purchased this laptop from Amazon about a month ago for X with a X rebate (still waiting). I have been very impressed with both the build quality and the feature set. No matter what bells and whistles are offered, the most important criteria’s for purchase a laptop is portability, power, memory, battery life and WLAN (unless you’re a gamer). The laptop addresses all of the above and more at an attractive price point. I am a tech and consider myself to be a pretty demanding user, so a netbook was out of the question. I began to research looking for budget laptops in the 13.3-14.1 size range. I was looking for a laptop that weighed 5 pounds or less with a built in optical drive. I was not beholden to any name brand in particular. I compared HP’s 13 with Dell’s 13 and Toshiba’s 13. Each had LED screens, T6500 processors, 4GB of memory and 320GB hard drives. These were my top three choices in the sub 0 price range. This HP quick ship configuration added a 9 cell battery, a 500 GB hard drive and a lower price (with rebate) than its competitors. SOLD!

As for the hardware itself, it is very glossy and has a lot of chrome. So I named it Cadillac. It came with a microfiber rag and it is very necessary. The HP logo glows at the back (cool effect). Touch sensitive buttons make the laptop look futuristic. This is my first widescreen laptop. It is actually wider than an old 14.1 inch Dell laptop I have. It is interesting how things change every few years. The display is phenomenal for its size. Watching shows on Hulu or YouTube videos are crispy clear. Note: The screen does not open to a full 180 degree angle. It is very quiet and does not run hot. The keyboard is a full keyboard and is pretty comfortable and well laid out. The CAPS lock light is next to the key (I missed it at first). Chrome mouse pad works well, but is a little showy I think. Interestingly enough it has a vertical scroll but no horizontal one. It can be disabled when using and external mouse. The 9 cell battery elevates the laptop at the back. This is a fair trade off to pay for almost a full day of use. I actually like the angle it creates, some may not however. No gigabit Ethernet comes with this (surprising omission) only 10/100. It does have wireless N draft but no Bluetooth. I can always put one of those nano Bluetooth adapters in one of the 3 usb ports I guess.

As for software, I am not going to talk about Vista as I am not a big fan. I am eligible for a free upgrade to 7 and I intend to do so ASAP. I do like the Cyber DVD Suite that came preinstalled so I kept it, however I uninstalled just about everything else. Media Center makes any of the HP media smart software unnecessary. Plus the cute little included remote works with Media Center.

Pros – Size, weight, price, battery, wireless N & 500 GB drive

Cons – No Bluetooth, no gigabit Ethernet, a lot of Bling
