HP Pavilion DV6-1360US 15.6-Inch Espresso Laptop – Up to 3.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Customer Review

My wife and bought this to replace an older HP pavilion. We currently live abroad and had arranged for it to be brought to us by some friends who came to visit. We would have ordered a custom built machine from HP, but it would not be delivered to our friends in time for their departure. So, we went with this quick-ship model from Amazon.

This computer runs Windows 7 perfectly with a fast start-up time and no waiting when you open programs, but where it really shines is watching media. The screen is very high-end with HD resolution that makes anything from you-tube videos to hulu, to DVDs beautiful to watch. There are two headphone jacks on the front so both you and a companion can watch a movie without turing on the speakers or having to go one earbud each. When you do want to use the speakers, they are very good for a computer this size. The computer also comes with a convenient media remote control that you can store in the express card slot on the left side of the chassis. I read many reviews of HP pavilions complaining about the touch smart media controls across the top of the keyboard, but I have found these to work really well. There are 4 USB ports, super fast draft “n” wifi, VGA out for an external monitor, and an HDMI out for connecting to an HDTV.

The only complaints we might have are rather minor. I think that the number pad on the right side of the keyboard is really unnecessary and doesn’t fit well on this size computer. It also makes the keyboard and mouse pad off-center from the screen which I don’t particularly like. The only other complaint is the high gloss finish on the lid and palm rests. It shows smudges and fingerprints every single time you touch the computer. I also don’t really love the imprint design on the lid and palm rest either. It isn’t bad, it just isn’t that great to me. I much prefer HP’s moonlight white imprint, but we needed this computer fast so we ordered it from Amazon instead of getting one custom from HP. The white is still high gloss, but it doesn’t show smudges as badly and I think it is more attractive. I do wish that HP would go back to their more timeless liquid-metallic/silver body color and can the stupid and unnecessarily cramped “full-size” keyboard.

This HP laptop is sturdy and well made, it runs very fast, it has lots of nice and well thought out little features like a remote and two headphone jacks, tons of ports for everything you need, and the screen is extremely good. Overall a great laptop especially considering the price.

Compaq Presario CQ61-420US 15.6-Inch Laptop (Black) Customer Review

I just received this nice 15.6″ notebook and I admit that I like it! The sound is great. The keypad is really handy when you need it. And the reponse of this computer is satisfying with windows 7 loaded.

However, pictures in its product page might be a deceiving. Although they are shown in the pics, this model does NOT come with a webcam and HDMI. I was surprised when I opened the box and found this truth. Hence, I further digged into the specification sheet and found that I was wrong. Beware, if you think this is really a steal with a webcam and HDMI for this low price, you may just make a mistake like what I did.

In all, I do not regret my decision of buying it at all. You can buy a netbook for 9.99. But I will pay a little bit more to go with this notebook (9.99) with full capability, faster processing speed and a DVD burner in trade of the mobility. Now, I am going return my cute but slow netbook…

I purchased this after having two computers die in one week! I was able to find this one on sale locally, a bit less expensive than Amazon and available immediately.
Overall I am happy with my purchase. Good size and speed. Having said that, my computing needs are basic. Mainly I use it for on-line research, e-mail, and school. Windows 7 has some cool visual upgrades and more importantly a faster start up.
I gave a four star rating because my other computers were made by HP and in my opinion died before their time. So far so good…

Lenovo Ideapad U-550 15.6-Inch Black Laptop – Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Home Premium) Customer Review

Here’s the summary of my experience with the Lenovo U-550

Pros
* Combination of 15.6 inch screen and relatively light weight
* Relatively long battery life
* Reasonably solid construction
* More than sufficient for moderate MS Office use and heavy internet/ entertainment use

Cons
* Lenovo customer support is a bureaucratic nightmare
* Numeric keypad occupies right-most section of the keyboard, shifting the remainder of the keyboard to the left
* Glossy screen and body translates into a grimy appearance due to finger prints
* Screen will slam shut against the keyboard unless you slow it as it closes

My previous Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop was near death, so it was time to replace it after ~ 4 years of heavy use. I was happy with the Dell, but it was a heavy beast that plowed through battery power. In looking for the replacement, I wanted an impossible combination of desktop replacement like the E1505, but minus the weight, bulk, and limited battery performance of the E1505. Upon shopping, I was unimpressed with MacBook Pro given the price. Other Wintel thin and light machines appeared to be cheaply built or with low-quality components/ limited screen size. The Lenovo Ideapad U-550 stood out to me as a higher quality build with a large screen. I knew that it came with a glossy screen, but I couldn’t find any other comparable machine without this annoyance. Also the numeric keypad placed on the rightmost section of the keyboard displaces the other keys to the left, which seems unnecessary to me (how many of us really key in data with a numeric keypad?).

All considered, I am happy with the purchase. The U-550 is easy to carry around, is good for the intended use (i.e. moderate MS Office use, heavy use for internet, movies, music), and has a reasonable battery life (~4+ hrs under perpetual use, less with a movie/ DVD thrown in).

The major shortcoming is Lenovo customer support. I wanted an additional battery for the U-550 to really cover a 6 hour flight under moderate use with DVDs. Attempting to get even this simple of a request accommodated through Lenovo customer support was a true nightmare. It took two days of transfers and frustration. Dell support was much better (but I was not impressed with their thin and light PCs).

I posted a long review of the current crop of DV6-21xx series of notebooks here: HP Pavilion DV6-2170US. The models are mostly the same with different CPUs (one has a discrete graphics chip). All include the newest mobile processors from Intel which eclipse the older Core2 line in terms of performance. Those with integrated graphics include Intel’s new HD graphics which are also a big improvement over Intel’s old 4500HD graphics (which are still inferior to discrete graphics chips from AMD/ATI and Nvidia when it come to 3D gaming). I would suggest avoiding the older DV6 13xx and 12xx series unless you can get a really good price (which may happen as HP discontinues them).

Here is the summary of models I posted in that review:

If you’re staring at the various DV6 models trying to decide which one to buy my advice is (based on the models available when I wrote this):

- For home users who aren’t gamers you can save about 0 if you go with the HP Pavilion DV6-2150US 15.6-Inch Laptop which combines a Core i3 with Win 7 Premium and a 6 cell battery. The performance for non-gaming software will be very close to the more expensive i5 models and you’ll save money by going with Win 7 Premium and a smaller battery.

- If you need good battery life, run higher end software, or like to game a bit go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2170US which combines the Core i5 with the 12 cell battery. The Intel graphics aren’t the best but it’s a big improvement over past products. This is the model I think has the best balance of features.

- If gaming matters more than battery life you should probably look at other laptop lines but if you are sold on the DV6 go for the HP Pavilion DV6-2190US which has a quad CPU Core i7 and NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M graphics. It’s only got a 6 cell battery and that CPU and graphics are going to drain it quickly. You’ll pay about 0 over this model.

- If you have a lot of older software consider the HP Pavilion DV6-2157SB Small Business Edition which comes with Windows 7 Pro (which can run older software on a WinXP kernel). It has a Core i3 and a 6 cell battery. It also has a different finish (“Plaid Mocha”) but I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment on it.
