Acer Aspire Timeline AS1810TZ-4008 11.6-Inch Olympic Edition Laptop (Silver) Customer Review

Finally got my notebook (netbook?) and so far it has been great during the past 2 weeks of operation.
Boots up quickly, decent graphics and the keyboard is easy to use. I was hoping it would play an old game called Beachhead 2002 but it’s a little sluggish. But I didn’t buy it to play video games and wanted a traveling machine. Was thinking about the 10 inch netbooks but they sounded too small and taking my heavy 17″ HP on trips from the Middle East back to the US takes up too much space/weight. Have yet to take it on the road but I think it will do all I need.

I had already purchased the Samsung DVD burner (listed in the ad) in anticipation of getting a smaller notebook and both seem to work well together. Battery life running the burner is yet to be seen but I am impressed with it so far. Of course after running a bigger laptop with shorter life, anything would have longer battery power.

One thing I’m curious about (emailed Acer but no reply) is the Bluetooth indicator and switch on the front. The instructions call out that it is for limited models but I wonder if it’s a hardware issue or if software can be added to bring it to life. Currently using the IOGear bluetooth adapter with a BT Microsoft mouse 5000 and it all seems to work very well.

This was a VISA rewards item to myself and as luck would have it, it was sent from Amazon to my Stateside address and then sent over. I still don’t understand why Amazon won’t ship electronics and some vendors have problems shipping to an APO address but thats just another rant.

Availability of this laptop has been rather limited but I recommend buying this one or similar size unit. It’s a great blend of performance and size. Not a speed demon but for a small laptop it’s quiet, doesn’t heat up (so far)and good performance so I’m glad I was able to get it. The cover design is pretty trick but I guess I was thinking the cover was aluminum as per write ups and the color in photos. Not bad plastic but I was hoping. The inside piece where the mouse is located is aluminum however. I hope this little jewel lasts for a very long time.

What a great new technology is that AMD HyperTransport, which eliminates number of buses on the system and avoids data transfer bottlenecks, plaguing old FSB systems. Surprisingly, this AMD TF-20 1.6GHz system is noticeably faster and running smoother than similarly priced Intel Celeron 900-based systems with 2.2 GHz processor and double sized L2 cache.

Also, this laptop has a great ATI Radeon 3200 graphics chip, which also helps to balance and speed up the processing load of the system.

Our Acer is running perfectly. I bought it for my wife, who uses it for videos, MP3’s, browsing internet, word processing and not much else.

I set it up by first downloading and installing a free, wonderful Revo uninstaller, available everywhere. Then I uninstalled all the preinstalled junk, like McAfee antivirus, MS Office trial, Adobe Acrobat Reader and other useless and bulky stuff. Did it using option 4 on the Revo uninstaller, which removes all the leftovers of any software from the registry. Then I installed her the following wonderful freeware: Firefox and Chrome for browsing, PDF Xchange viewer, VLC Player for audio and video, Irfanview for photo viewing and basic editing, Abiword for word processing, Glary utilities for system maintenance, Avast antivirus, Spyware Blaster, Wordweb (a thesaurus and dictionary), Skype and that’s about it. Of course, updated all drivers and Windows 7. And here it is – a frugal but smooth running, fast, modern and really wonderful Acer notebook.

Acer Aspire 5517 15.6-Inch Laptop – Black Customer Review

My husband bought himself and I this laptop during Black Friday 2009. It is almost February so we haven’t had them that long. My husband waited until Christmas to use his as a Christmas present and mine was for my Birthday in November. After opening his, within a week his laptop began shutting off after 5 minutes on the battery. No warnings or anything. He reformatted the computer but to no avail it still didn’t work.

The customer service was awful trying to work with. My husband knows more about computers than a lot of people with Computer Science degrees. He’s one of those computer geeks who takes computers apart, builds his own, writes his own codes etc; so he knows what he’s doing… The customer service kept repeating the usual steps on what he must be doing wrong and not listening to him. He got no where with customer service. So it’s going to have to be shipped out to the manufacturer to get fixed. More than likely it’s the battery.. That is typical of an electronic device. They all have their little kinks..BUT just within the last week now my laptop has messed up.

I have been using it from day one after Thanksgiving and all of a sudden one day the mouse pad locked up and stopped working. My husband checked for viruses and reformatted mine too. Now mine is getting shipped out as well! Even though these are minor breaks this to me shows you the cheapness in making this model. These are petty breaks that should have been worked out before sent out for consumer purchases.

If anyone is considering buying this computer I would recommend saving your money. They may be small breaks but this is really annoying to deal with and I will definitely not be buying anymore Acer laptops. This was my first purchase with them too. I’ve used Dell and Gateway and have not had any trouble with them. I doubt this laptop will last more than a couple years the rate they’re going right now for us. Maybe I’m wrong though, maybe after all the kinks are out it’ll work great. But like I said in the title, you get what you pay for!

ATTENTION:
Okay, my husband finally found someone to help us from Acer… He was not customer service(they all were foreign and hard to understand). The guy told us there is a button on the left next to the power button on the laptop that turns your touch pad off. If you didn’t read the directions you wouldn’t know this. So at least just one of our laptops is messed up and the guy said that just to call customer service and they will send you a new battery without you shipping your whole computer out.

if i didn’t have to return this item, i would have given a 5 rating because it met all my expectations. every so often a large vertical stripe would appear in the middle of the screen when i did a fresh boot up. if the stripe appeared, i would have to put notebook into sleep mode, turn it back on, and the stripe would disappear. i submitted an RMA and i was almost immediately provided with a tracking # for the new item that is going to be sent to me.

it’s a very small and lightweight notebook, the keyboard is very easy to get used to (my first notebook purchase), and the wireless connection is definitely stronger than my bro’s older viao laptop, compaq laptop, and my 2nd generation ipod touch. mouse gestures work great though due to the size of the entire book, the mouse area is pretty small. i found that the battery life is an hour short of the advertised life but my truck doesn’t really get 18 mpg either.

i bought this notebook specifically for school and to link my external HDD to my HD tv via HDMI. i will also be using this for some spreadsheets and simple access databases. i rarely have the need for a cd/dvd rom; portability is much more important to me. i have an above average knowledge of computers and this is perfect for a stud like me. if you’re a regular computer user and can work around not having an internal cd/dvd rom drive, get this notebook. most people don’t have any use for dual cores, 4 gigs of ram, crazy video cards, or any of that other stuff companies add on so they can rack up the price. (i did read in a review for the older model that this notebook should be able to play wc3 on high settings, woot)

i would recommend this to another person and i would definitely buy another acer product even though i had to return this one. i have an Acer ws 22″ monitor that has given me many utils of happiness.
