A long time ago, I used to have a VAIO desktop computer. It ran great, it had everything I wanted and it runs to this day … When I want to use an older processor and motherboard. But I purchased this new VAIO laptop as a “part-time business use, part-time personal use” machine. And boy does it serve that role well!

Pros: Best screen (resolution and size), good (but not great) hardware components, Blu Ray!, very usuable – right out of the box, good quality sound (but… see the cons)

Though I do not have many complaints about this product, there are some things I wish worked better.
Cons: Speakers – while sounding good – are very quiet, short power cord from the brick compared to other laptops, Wireless NIC drivers have some problems, heavy and bulky (but no more so than other laptops in this size), doesn’t come with Vista Ultimate, my preferred OS until 7 is released.

The only on going problem with this machine is that the wireless NIC drivers have trouble connecting to the VPN at my office. The built-in speakers are very quiet, though very nice sounding, during movie playback. If you don’t have good headphones, you might want to consider add-on external speaker(s). Other than that, this machine runs like a champ and I hope will give me many years of good service.

Pro: No other laptops in this price range have as excellent of a video card as this one…Source-engined games (Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal) run flawlessly on max settings, and even high-end games run quite playably on higher settings, albeit with antialiasing turned down a bit: Crysis, specifically, easily manages 20-30fps or more with most settings on high and antialising off or kept at 2X or so. For those of you that are curious, YES it plays WoW on max settings. Leaps and bounds more game-savvy than any other sub-00 laptop I’ve ever seen, the vast majority of which come equipped with woefully inadequate Intel integrated graphics. A massive amount of RAM for the price makes multitasking a breeze. Downgrades to XP very easily, with ready availability of both 32- and 64-bit drivers from the manufacturer’s website. The screen has only average resolution, but is very bright and clear. Build quality is very good, and thanks in part to the brushed aluminum, the laptop feels pretty rugged. The “eco” button seems a bit odd at first, but is useful to switch easily between different power settings (for playing a game on-the-go versus max battery life). Compared to a lot of other manufacturers, this laptop doesn’t ship with a lot of bloatware. Online tech support is surprisingly good, especially compared to that of certain other larger-and-more-mainstream manufacturers *cough*Toshiba!*cough*

Con: Keyboard layout (minor thing, but crouch will have to be remapped from control key to shift key for most FPS games), and the “turbo” button, while functional, is a bit gimmicky. Battery life is adequate (about 2 hours watching a video). Speakers are pretty clear but somewhat quiet, and can be slightly tinny-sounding at higher volumes and higher frequencies: I’ve heard much worse from laptop speakers, but I’ve also heard better. For some reason, only MSI’s video drivers can be used in Vista, but if you downgrade to XP, Nvidia’s most recent video drivers readily install without a problem. The processor is good, but not spectacular, and its limitations become apparent if you do CPU-heavy tasks (video/audio conversion, for example) versus GPU-heavy tasks (games).

Other comments: Mine had a defective webcam, but the manufacturer’s tech support responded to my inquiries very quickly and accurately (advising a product exchange with the vendor), and amazon overnighted a replacement at no cost. This laptop DOES have three USB ports, but the one on the right side doubles as an E-SATA port. It looks superficially different, but I’ve plugged USB devices in to it and it functions just fine. Additionally, this laptop is eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade program, though it doesn’t say so on Amazon-be sure to go to the manufacturer’s website instead.

I almost bought Dell studio 17″, but a lot of reviews said troubles with disk drive and one other thing (I don’t remember). Some said they can be fixed. I don’t want to fix anything after I paid for a brand new machine. Manufacturer needs to see that fixing is not required by the user; it is his responsibility. So I went for Sony VGN-FW370J which is 0.6 short of 17″. A bit pricy like a salesman from Best Buy said “You are paying for the name”. I could have got a laptop with similiar capability for some 0 less. I like the stylish design and color and the specifications. I bought this one to supplement my existing 3 years old HP dv6000 15.4″ which is giving some trouble with wireless reception. Works OK with ethernet connected. Sony laptop is great and I don’t regret that I bought it. Wireless picked up real fast and I like it. A couple of cons I came through in one month. One time screen went all black in the middle of work and I had to restart. On another occassion, screen changed to black and white stripes also in the middle of work but went away after restart. So I must be careful to save my work. I don’t know if it can be fixed and I have not contacted Sony. I am a right hander and use wireless mouse. This machine has all USB ports near the front right side which kind of hinders my mouse hand movements. Well, I have learned to live with one or the other shortcomings of all electronic consumer products. Other than those, this is a great machine worth investing.

I bought this shortly after I went out on my own contract programming. I liked the bigger screen because it was replacing my desktop. So far I’ve been extremely pleased with it, aside from the keyboard. I use it many hours every day, travel with it regularly, work at home and at various coffee shops, etc.

The screen is excellent – and plenty bright even on battery. After a year the battery still gets about the same amount of time as it did originally – around two hours under normal use. I am usually on AC.

The only thing I am unhappy with is the keyboard. If you have to type a lot and will be depending on the unit’s keyboard, I must recommend that you pick a different machine. I can’t understand what they were thinking when they designed this — it is almost like the keyboard was an afterthought. The right shift key, the slash, and the period (not to mention the arrow keys) are so small that you may wear out the backspace key before its time. I can’t give you too much information on what else you will run in to – I carry a full size USB keyboard in my bag, which I planned to do anyway as I am not much for laptop keyboards anyway. This setup works out great for me. If the keyboard is not an issue for you, I highly recommend this machine.

Some of the other features I don’t use as much: the fingerprint reader is a neat gadget and it works well enough once you get used to it, and get the method down, but it was just something to mess with for me. I don’t currently use it.

It has plenty of USB ports, a card reader port, which handles SD (I was delighted to discover when I needed it) and some others. An ample hard drive (160GB) and 2 Gig of memory (this was must for me; I wanted it to handle the applications I was running smoothly, and that was about the max you could find in an out-of-the-box machine at the time). The built-in wireless card works great, it has a firewire port, dvd writer/everything drive that works great. And finally the price seems very good for a machine like this with durability that I trust.

WHY TOSHIBA?

about 6 years ago I did some research which gave me the impression that toshibas, though a bit heavier, had outstanding durability. My first one was (still is) fantastic. I am still running it non-stop on my network, but I needed more memory/speed/disk space. In between my wife bought one which as performed exceptionally as well. I have not been disappointed in any of my Toshibas. The keyboards on the other two were fine, by the way. As far as personal experience, I’ve seen way too many Dells fail first hand (including one of ours). As far as other brands, I don’t have first hand experience, but few looked as good as Toshibas when I researched them, and none for the price.

These features include an 13.3″ LED backlit screen (LED backlight optional), slot loading optical drive, brushed aluminum casing, biometric finger print reader (optional), Media player with travel remote (optional), integrated camera, HDMI out, Solid state hard drive ‘SSHD’ (optional), and a good selection of laptop colors to choose from. To finish it off, it features powerful CPU choices ( from 1.66Ghz to 2.5Ghz “Core 2 Duo” Intel Processors) and an optional 128mb NVIDIA GeForce Graphics Card. But along with the good, there are a few things that keep this laptop from being perfect. One thing that I really wished this laptop had was more than just 2 USB ports. Not only that, but the ports are on opposite sides of the computer. Also, there isn’t even an option for buying an integrated Blu-ray drive… which doesn’t make any sense when you see that there’s a beautiful 13.3 wide-screen and HDMI port on this thing.

Still, there’s a lot to love about the Dell M1330. It’s ultra portable/super thin wedge shape design, full-sized keyboard, and built-in memory card slot, integrated web-cam & mic, and 2 headphone jacks, also adds to it’s intrinsic value and charm. Few laptops can match both it’s ‘power per size’ ratio. And although it’s been available now for a couple years, it can still hold it’s own among some of the newer laptops on the market. And when it’s all said and done, I think that it makes this Dell a true “classic”… especially now that Dell has discontinued this model. It can still be acquired “new or used” on sites like Ebay, through Dell’s online Outlet store, and other online sources. It’s also still available at some retail stores.

Pros:

-Great super portable, sleek, light, and sexy design.
-Powerful (up to 2.5GHz Core 2 Duo and 128mb NVIDIA GeForce Video Card option)
-Nice array of colors available including “Blue, Pink, White, Black, and Red”
-Slot Loading Optical drive
-Wide array of hard drive options including SSHD, easy to DIY hard drive upgrade as well.

Cons:
-Only 2 USB drives
-No Blu-ray Option
-Standard 6-cell battery doesn’t last too long (about 2 hrs) Don’t even bother with 3-cell batt.
-9 Cell battery available but it’s very expensive and adds much bulk to laptop.(sticks out too)

Conclusion:
This is a sexy and powerful high-end ultra-portable laptop. I’ve heard that it was rated the most powerful laptop per it’s size (when it was first released) …But this may not be true anymore. The XPS line of Dell laptop has a higher build quality than most regular consumer laptops on the market. And because the prices for this model has drastically dropped (now that it’s been discontinued), it’s even more of a bargain. Mine has been very dependable and I’d highly recommend it to others.
