Pro: No other laptops in this price range have as excellent of a video card as this one…Source-engined games (Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, Portal) run flawlessly on max settings, and even high-end games run quite playably on higher settings, albeit with antialiasing turned down a bit: Crysis, specifically, easily manages 20-30fps or more with most settings on high and antialising off or kept at 2X or so. For those of you that are curious, YES it plays WoW on max settings. Leaps and bounds more game-savvy than any other sub-00 laptop I’ve ever seen, the vast majority of which come equipped with woefully inadequate Intel integrated graphics. A massive amount of RAM for the price makes multitasking a breeze. Downgrades to XP very easily, with ready availability of both 32- and 64-bit drivers from the manufacturer’s website. The screen has only average resolution, but is very bright and clear. Build quality is very good, and thanks in part to the brushed aluminum, the laptop feels pretty rugged. The “eco” button seems a bit odd at first, but is useful to switch easily between different power settings (for playing a game on-the-go versus max battery life). Compared to a lot of other manufacturers, this laptop doesn’t ship with a lot of bloatware. Online tech support is surprisingly good, especially compared to that of certain other larger-and-more-mainstream manufacturers *cough*Toshiba!*cough*
Con: Keyboard layout (minor thing, but crouch will have to be remapped from control key to shift key for most FPS games), and the “turbo” button, while functional, is a bit gimmicky. Battery life is adequate (about 2 hours watching a video). Speakers are pretty clear but somewhat quiet, and can be slightly tinny-sounding at higher volumes and higher frequencies: I’ve heard much worse from laptop speakers, but I’ve also heard better. For some reason, only MSI’s video drivers can be used in Vista, but if you downgrade to XP, Nvidia’s most recent video drivers readily install without a problem. The processor is good, but not spectacular, and its limitations become apparent if you do CPU-heavy tasks (video/audio conversion, for example) versus GPU-heavy tasks (games).
Other comments: Mine had a defective webcam, but the manufacturer’s tech support responded to my inquiries very quickly and accurately (advising a product exchange with the vendor), and amazon overnighted a replacement at no cost. This laptop DOES have three USB ports, but the one on the right side doubles as an E-SATA port. It looks superficially different, but I’ve plugged USB devices in to it and it functions just fine. Additionally, this laptop is eligible for the free Windows 7 upgrade program, though it doesn’t say so on Amazon-be sure to go to the manufacturer’s website instead.

This is my first laptop as I head off to uni in a year, and my desktop was becoming unbearable. Initially, I was supposed to get a different model but settled on this one, hoping to get more RAM and lots of connectivity options. Got this at Best Buy for 0 cheaper, and is great for the price! The 4GB of RAM is extra handy for really demanding apps, the webcam works great, MediaSmart is great to watch videos and the sound is also great for music. The OS, Windows 7 greatly improves from its predecessor, no more annoying popups and the GUI is great!
I live in Australia, and the region has no issues with this laptop! Only a few issues remain: the annoyance of constantly appearing updates (”Computer Analysis”), the touchpad has its faults (be sure to buy a USB mouse), there’s no Bluetooth connectivity and the computer can be unresponsive at times.
Other than that, the positives heavily outweigh the negatives so I would recommend this to anyone looking for a first laptop!

I apologise first of all because I didn’t buy this from Amazon. I bought it from a dealer in Beijing’s Computer Area for roughly the RMB equivalent of GBP600. After my last laptop, a BenQ JoyBook which should really have been called MiseryBook, this truly is a joy to use. It’s fast: on a fast internet connection you can work almost as fast as you can think and that feels amazing. Compared to the Benq, the screen is really bright. Really bright. It looks totally cool in navy blue and silver. The keyboard (which was the reason I had vowed never to have a Dell again)is a real pleasure to use: I love it. I’m running Avira, Spybot, Spywareblaster, Malwarebytes, CCleaner, Stopzilla, Eusing Registry Cleaner, Ad-aware, Glary Utilities and Superdefrag and it runs really clean. Before I was always having to waste time getting rid of viruses. All in all, IMHO this is a just a wonderful machine to use. My only gripe is that all the documentation and software was in Chinese and Dell China/Hong Kong refused point blank to provide a duplicate in English despite my many efforts, although they could have done so had they wanted to. I did manage to download an English manual from their US website, but no thanks to them. Shameless. So I will never buy from them again since their’s is a culture of contempt. The Basics
- Processor: The 2.16 GHz Intel Pentium T3400 dual-core processor delivers additional computing resources and help expand the PC’s capabilities by providing higher throughput and simultaneous computing. You’ll be able to perform multiple tasks such as digital rendering and gaming all while running virus scan or other background tasks seamlessly. And its Intel 64 architecture is also ready for tomorrow’s 64-bit applications, and offers enhanced performance through improved virtual memory. Each core shares 2 MB of L2 cache, and they have a 667 MHz front-side bus. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system’s performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
- Hard Drive: The generous 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (5400 RPM) provides more than enough capacity for storing a large audio and video library, as well as extra space required for video editing. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data–akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.
- Memory: The 4 GB of installed RAM (PC2-5300, 2 x 2 GB) maximizes the capacity of this notebook, and it also offers a quick 667 MHz speed.
- DVD/CD Drive: The dual-layer DVD drive is compatible with a wide range of formats, including both DVD+RW and DVD-RW discs, CD-RW discs, and dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can hold up to 8.5 GB of data–great for backing up your MP3 collection or your most important documents. It features the following speeds: 4x for DVD+R DL, 4x for DVD-R DL, 8x for both single layer DVD±R, 8x for single layer DVD+RW, 6x for single layer DVD-RW, 5x for DVD-RAM, and 24x/16x for CD-R/RW. It reads DVD-ROM discs at 8x and CD-ROMs at 24x.

Enjoy easy wireless networking with the integrated tri-mode Atheros Draft-N wireless LAN (compatible with 802.11b/g/n wireless networks). Based on the draft 802.11n Wi-Fi specification, it offers up to five times the performance and twice the wireless range as existing 802.11g wireless.
