I’ve owned this exact unit for more than six months now. I purchased it strictly for road trips, as I have several custom-built desktops and a larger/luggable Lenovo notebook at home. It’s a terrific travel UMPC. You need to get used to the still-usable smallish keyboard (with a Return key way too close to the up/down arrow keys) and the very tiny fonts/display (even when enlarged to 125%), but still very good. It’s terrific having the SDD instead of an accident-prone spinning HDD. There’s no need for a separate PC case, it fits right in my carry-on along with its very tiny power supply.

My only issue is: even upgraded to Windows 7 Home Premium with all Intel and Sony video driver patches, it still can’t do video of any quality or size without stuttering/hiccup’ing, which is very annoying for any netbook/notebook in this premium price range.

I loved the concept of a netbook because I’m a writer who just needs basic word-processing, web and portability. Oh, and affordability — I don’t like paying 00 for a tiny version of a Sony vaio.

I first tried buying a 9″ Asus, which was astonishingly portable — but it was way too small to be practical, so I gave it to my 7 year old niece. I then got an Acer Aspire One that had a better keyboard but which still was slightly too small. The niece will get this one too.

The HP 1000 series struck me as having the perfect keyboard, and I decided to get the 2140 because it has a classy aluminum case and some ruggedness.

It’s taken me a while to get used to the smaller screen. But I’ve finally started using it and adjusting to it. And it’s giving me all the basic functionality I need, with great portability and the kind of aesthetics that make you proud to own it.

This is a very fast and sturdy machine with a nice design. It comes with Windows XP Pro SP2 installed, Windows 7 Pro discs for upgrading are included. Several accesories programs can be installed from the hard drive by touching the HP Info Center light (just beside the on/off button) then clicking at the HP software setup icon to select which one to install. The only minor disappointment was that I expected a backlite keyboard but, instead, the laptop has a tiny light at the top of the lid that can be turned on by pushing a button. Probably I misunderstood the information when I read about that at the HP web site. Beside this, I am very satisfied with the product.
